Russell struggles in the 2026 season

George Russell's 2026 Formula One season has turned into a major technical mystery. After starting strong with a win in Australia, the Mercedes driver has hit a massive slump. He is currently facing a 43-point championship gap and is being heavily outpaced by his teammate who is only in his second season Andrea Kimi Antonelli. Russell admits he is completely "bamboozled" by his missing speed, leaving fans wondering if his car setup was accidentally swapped with a lawnmower.

Starting strong

Though his current struggles make fans feel like he has thrown away his championship Russel did start strong with a race victory at the Australian Grand Prix and a sprint win in China. Mercedes shocked the paddock during Saturday’s qualifying session by securing a front-row lockout. Russell took pole position with an impressive lap time of 1:18.518, which was nearly eight-tenths of a second faster than the non-Mercedes cars. This was shocking because the race itself was wild. Russell had a sluggish start and immediately lost the lead to Ferrari's Charles Leclerc. The two drivers swapped the lead seven times before Russel took the win. Though the Mercedes driver didn’t win the china Grand Prix race he did win the sprint race there. So you can see how a strong start like this easily got him into being a championship contender. In Miami which is a circuit where he has never done well and has found challenging before he managed to finish a heroic 4th.  Then came Montreal.

A heartbreaking loss in Canada

Russel has always  done well in the Canadian Grand Prix. In 2025 he won the race by a putting together an incredible lap to beat Max Verstappen to pole by 0.160 seconds. This probably made the loss much harder for him. The sprint race was a different story as he took the win. Russell lost the lead on the very first lap to Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton, who made a blistering start from fourth on the grid. The former teammates went wheel-to-wheel in a frantic scrap, exchanging the lead six times over the first five laps. On Lap 5, Russell made a brilliant overtaking move at the Turn 14 hairpin to reclaim the lead for good. When the lights went out on Sunday, the two Mercedes put on a racing masterclass. Russell and Kimi Antonelli built a massive five-second lead over the rest of the grid. They were wheel to wheel for almost the entire race! On Lap 30, while leading the race, Russell's car suddenly suffered a catastrophic battery failure with severe heat damage. His entire engine completely shut off instantly. Furious and in disbelief, Russell climbed out of his car and threw his steering headrest onto the track in anger, an action he later had to formally apologise for to the FIA. Antonelli inherited the lead to win his fourth consecutive race, blowing the championship gap open to 43 points.

The Mercedes team

The Mercedes F1 team is facing major internal tension. The team relations have become highly strained as George Russell and his 19-year-old rookie teammate, Kimi Antonelli, fight directly for wins and the 2026 World Championship. The relationship between the drivers has shifted drastically. At the beginning of the year, Russell was expected to be the clear team leader. However, Antonelli’s massive 43-point championship lead has completely altered the dynamic, triggering several heated moments. During the Canadian Grand Prix weekend, Russell and Antonelli aggressively banged wheels while fighting for the lead. Antonelli went flying across the grass due to Russell's defense and angrily complained over the team radio. The intense battle is making team bosses very nervous. Tensions spilled into the media when Russell claimed the title was now "Antonelli's to lose". Antonelli immediately hit back, reminding Russell that the season is still incredibly long. Team Principal Toto Wolff has had to personally step in to keep the peace. He held an emergency sit-down meeting with both drivers to review the Canada incidents and lay down strict rules. Antonelli publicly stated that they must stay united and avoid a repeat of the toxic "internal war" seen between Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg in 2016. The Mercedes team especially the drivers need to keep their cool and make sure they don’t make rash decisions which might mess up their constructors championship.

Ultimately, George Russell’s 2026 season has become the ultimate Formula One roller coaster. He went from crushing the competition in Australia to throwing his car parts in Canada and looking completely lost in Miami. If he wants to save his championship dreams, he needs to solve his tire mysteries and stop his rookie teammate from running away with his trophy.
